Easy Dog Treat Recipe to Make at Home Using Pantry Staple Ingredients

Hi, friends! How are you all holding up?

It’s been such a wild few days and I feel really frazzled and emotionally exhausted. You probably do too.

For me, baking is always therapeutic. It lets me disconnect from the outside world and focus on something I can control. I’ve been baking a lot of loaves of homemade bread these past few weeks and it’s been so good for my anxiety. I love that it’s a process you can’t rush and there’s something that’s just so good and right about the smell of fresh bread.

Since so many of us are riding out quarantine with our pups, I wanted to pull together a little dog biscuit recipe that’s made with stuff you probably already have in your pantry. All you need is two small apples (or one big apple), some flour, some peanut butter, and some cornmeal. (If you don’t have cornmeal, try swapping in another dog-friendly grain like oats.)

Dave (our Dachshund) and I took a little break from moping on the couch to put together this recipe, and I think it helped us both to perk up.

👇🏻He was definitely a fan of taste-testing the different options.

Pantry Staple Dog Biscuits

Makes 12-15 biscuits.

Prep Time: 10 Minutes. | Cook Time: 15 Minutes

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 Small Apples or 1 Large Apple

  • 1/2 Cup of Water

  • 1/2 Cup of Cornmeal

  • 1/4 Cup of Peanut Butter (Check that it doesn’t contain Xylitol, which is bad for dogs.)

  • 1 1/4 Cup of Whole Wheat Flour

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°

  2. Slice apple and discard core and seeds. Add apple slices and water to blender and puree until smooth.

  3. Pour apple puree until a medium mixing bowl and stir in cornmeal, peanut butter, and whole wheat flour.

  4. Use whole wheat flour to light flour a surface. Remove dough from bowl and roll out on prepared surface until it is roughly 1/4 inch thick.

  5. Use a cookie cutter to punch out cookies and lay on cookie sheet. If you don’t have one on hand, try rolling the treats into balls and flattening with a fork like you would a peanut butter cookie.

  6. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes or until edges of treats begin to look golden brown.

  7. Remove from oven and allow treats to cool.

  8. Watch your pup enjoy!
